They destroyed big part of the production line and entire inventory of produced heavy water that was there. They managed to enter the basement, place charges and lit the fuse without being noticed. So because of that team decided to go drop down to the frozen river and scale mountain where plant was located. Plant was fortified after failed Operation Freshman with floodlights, mines and only bridge to the plant was heavily guarded.
Later that month after they made plans and gathered all supplies they went after the plant. That was beginning of the Operation Gunnerside. Those 4 Norwegians had to survive harsh winter and in February Britain finally sent 6 additional Norwegians to join them. Those who didn't die after crashing were captured by Germans, tortured and in the end executed by Hitlers order. They did that but when second part was attempted (called Operation Freshman) where British paratroopers were meant to join those 4 they failed due to weather conditions (planes crashed). Operation Grouse was first one and it was successful, goal was to plant 4 Norwegians around plant (called Vemork) where heavy water was produced to study and memorize layouts and surroundings. It was meant to be Norway and Britain joint mission where Norwegian resistance trained by British SOE and British soldiers would destroy heavy water production plant in Norway.
Real world mission that Nordlys War Story mission was based on was called Operation Gunnerside (that was actually one of the 3 operations that led to destruction of heavy water production, first two were Grouse, and Freshman). And DICE really simplified and changed it without reason.įor those who don't know what am i talking about here is short summary. That is probably one of the most important mission that Norway did during WW2 and it was potentially history defining moment (who knows what Germans would manage to do with enough heavy water). Because i remembered that i watched documentary about that mission and i was reading about it few years ago. Friend of mine was playing BFV and we started talking about it when he described me how are War Stories (only part i am interested in because i am more singleplayer person than MP) i was really surprised when he told me about first one Nordlys.
